I had been casually looking amongst all the lace tops out there for the last year or for the perfect one. When I stumbled across Anthropologie’s Elysian Lace Top online, my heart skipped a beat. The steep price tag and shipping costs ($10, what!?) deterred me. I visited the site almost daily just to look at it and try to decide if it was worth purchasing before I found the Forever 21 Ornate Lace Top. For only $22, I decided “why not?” Once I wore it once and washed it it pretty much fell apart and I knew it just wasn’t going to cut it. Then, I found exactly what I was looking for. Express came out with the Embroidered Lace Tee in natural. It wasn’t the crisp white I was looking for but I knew I had to try it on. By time I got around to a store Express had released the shirt in more colors, including white. I tried it on and was in love! I bought it immediately, intending to wear it for my engagement photos. Just a few weeks ago I found the Anthropologie Elysian top in-store and even though I had already filled my need for a lace top, I decided to try it on. Boy, am I glad I went with the Express version. The Elysian top was too big, even in a size small. It was beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but it just hung off my body in an unflattering way. I left the store even more happy with my previous purchase.
What did I learn? Sometimes you get what you pay for. In the instance of the Forever 21 top, I only spent $22 and it was the most affordable of the lace tops I found, but it was a shirt that I’ll probably never really wear again. You also never really know how a shirt will fit you until you actually try it on.
