Chris and I are just about to approach our first home anniversary. It has been so awesome to move into a proper three-bedroom home vs our small rentals. We quickly ran out of stuff to fill our space, which was a nice change. For the most part, we have completely settled in to our home and have set up every room to some degree. The most neglected room, though, is our home office. I’m still trying to figure out what function this space will have and how I want it to look because, as usual, I’m fighting my feminine room dreams and trying to embrace a more masculine look. I threw together a home office inspiration mood board to really figure out what I am drawn to so I can finally finish the room.
You may be looking at my mood board and thinking, “that doesn’t look very masculine”. You may be right, but I think the greens, wood tones, and brass can still look masculine (am I right?). I really love the look of the first picture in the top-left (photo credit) and the best part is I already have the mint file cabinet from CB2. Chris and I are just about to outgrow it, though, so I may need to pick up another.
Our home office currently has a hideous ceiling fan that we will never use, and I would love to replace it with something unique like this brass chandelier from West Elm (inspired by this photo). I really do think lighting can change the entire look and feel of a room. We do have two windows in this room but with our dark floors, it still feels a bit grim. A large, bright area rug like this one from Lulu & Georgia would add a huge pop of color (to contrast our light grey walls).
As far as furniture for this room goes, we do already have a super nice cherry desk that Chris’s grandpa made. It’s beautiful and definitely more masculine than what I would normally be drawn too, but it’s perfect for the space. If we didn’t already have it, I would love one like the walnut Ellis Desk from Room & Board. I really struggle with finding the perfect chair but I do love the look of this one from West Elm. I think I may have a thing for walnut.
To top the space off, I love the look of this clock and memo board. They are two functional items that will fill out some of the wall space and still look chic. I’ll probably hang up a mirror of some sort (like this Target one that I have lying around) to bring more light into the room (I’m a bit obsessed). You know what else I’m obsessed with now? Plants. I plan on having plants all through my home and my home office is no exception. I’ve already made one trip to Stump and I’m sure there will be more trips.
How do you plan the layout and look of a room?
