I haven’t talked about it on here but I have been really interested in the Montessori-approach to play and education (aren’t they the same thing with a 14 month old?) I’ve never been a huge fan of large, loud plastic toys that have blinking lights and teach nothing and have preferred toys that are made of wood. Wood toys align more with my aesthetic but I also believe that they are more interesting and educational, which I eventually learned aligns with Montessori philosophies. I’m no purist by any means, but I am embracing Montessori-inspired gifts this for Isla this Christmas season.
If you are interested in providing Montessori and Montessori-inspired toys this holiday, I put together a mini gift list. It definitely does not include all age ranges, but if you are shopping for a child around 9 months to 2 years, here are some options:
Chris and I picked up a few items off of this list for Isla, including this Melissa & Doug cleaning set and blocks. We added a similar toddler tower on our wish list and I look forward to using one with Isla when she is a little older. I hope to introduce her to my love of baking as soon as she is able to stand more successfully.
Amazon and Ikea have many options for a Montessori home but I have been swooning over all the things from Sprout Kids. They have the most beautiful furniture so if you are looking to splurge, I would check there! I am hoping to add a few items to our home over the years as Isla grows and becomes more independent.
I hope to share more about how we are implementing Montessori philosophies in our home soon! If you are interested in learning more, I suggest checking out The Hapa Family on YouTube or following Montessori in Real Life on Instagram.
